Susan was the first wife of renowned investor Warren Buffett, and her legacy extends beyond her role in the Buffett family.
Susan graduated from Omaha Central High School and went on to attend Northwestern University. Born to William Hertzog Thompson, a minister, psychologist, and dean at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Susan’s upbringing instilled in her a sense of social responsibility and activism.
In 1952, Susan married Warren Buffett at the Dundee Presbyterian Church in Omaha. Their union resulted in three children: Susan Alice Buffett, Howard Graham Buffett, and Peter Buffett. Despite allegations and challenges in her marriage, Susan remained an integral part of the Buffett family, contributing not only as a mother but also as an influential activist.
A director of Berkshire Hathaway, Susan owned 2.2 percent of the company, valued at approximately $3 billion at the time of her death, making her one of the world’s wealthiest individuals. As the president of the Buffett Foundation, she channeled her wealth into significant contributions to educational groups, medical research, family planning organizations, and various charities.
Susan’s life took an unexpected turn when she pursued a singing career in the early 1970s. Encouraged by songwriter/musician Neil Sedaka, she left her husband temporarily to pursue her passion. Despite challenges in their marriage, Warren supported her endeavors.
In 1978, Susan introduced Warren Buffett to Astrid Menks, who would later become his wife after Susan’s passing. The unique dynamics of their relationship were notable, as the Buffetts continued to attend public functions together and signed Christmas cards as a trio.
In addition to her philanthropic work, Susan A. Buffett held key positions on the board of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., serving as a Director/Board Member since October 19, 2021. She also served as the Chairman of both The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and the Sherwood Foundation.
Susan’s financial acumen is reflected in her known holdings in public companies, including Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Class B and Class A shares. As of December 30, 2023, she held 4,378,644 Class B shares, amounting to 0.33% of the company, with a valuation of $1.562 billion. Her funeral, attended by family and friends, featured a performance by Bono. Warren Buffett, grief-stricken, did not attend. Susan’s legacy lives on through her charitable contributions, with approximately $50 million allocated to her children’s charity and substantial sums left to friends and employees.
