Stephan Weil has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG since February 19, 2013.Hhe studied law at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and completed both State Exams in Law by 1983. After practicing as a lawyer and serving as a judge and prosecutor, Weil held various positions in public administration, including City Treasurer and Lord Mayor of Hanover. Since February 2013, he has been the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony. Weil brings extensive knowledge and experience in management, law, employee matters, and sustainability/ESG. His expertise extends to the automotive industry, and he is well-versed in collaborating with government bodies, authorities, industry associations, trade unions, and the press.

Stephan Weil was born in Hamburg, Germany, on 15 December 1958. He commenced his law studies at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany, in 1978. He took his first State Exam in Law there in 1983, and sat his second State Exam in Law at the Higher Regional Court Celle, Germany, in 1983.

Stephan Weil practised as a lawyer in Hanover, Germany, from 1987 to 1989. From 1989 to 1991, he was a judge and prosecutor, in part on secondment to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice. He served as a judge at the Amtsgericht Hannover (Hanover Local Court), Germany, from 1991 to 1994, also on secondment to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice. He held the position of Ministerialrat at the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice from 1994 to 1997.

He was City Treasurer from 1997 to 2006 and Lord Mayor of the Lower Saxony capital of Hanover, Germany, from 2006 to 2013. Stephan Weil has served as Prime Minister of Lower Saxony since February 2013.

Thanks to his continual management activities in public administration and to his years of service as a supervisory board member in different industries, Stephan Weil has extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of management/supervision, law/compliance, employee matters and sustainability/ESG – environment, social and governance. Furthermore, he has special knowledge and experience of the automotive industry and is particularly experienced in interacting and working with government and authorities, industry associations, trade unions, and the press.
