Rolf Martin Schmitz was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany, on June 17, 1957. He studied engineering at the RWTH Aachen and received his doctorate in 1985 from the Chair of Thermal Transfer and Air Conditioning Technology there.
After working for STEAG AG in Essen and VEBA AG in DĂĽsseldorf, Rolf became a member of the Executive Board of rhenag Rheinische Energie AG in Cologne, Germany, in 1998 before serving on the Executive Board of ThĂĽga AG in Munich, Germany, from 2000 to 2004. He was then Chairman of the Management Board of E.ON Kraftwerke GmbH in Hanover, Germany, until September 2005 and later CEO of RheinEnergie AG in Cologne. He was a member of the Executive Board of RWE AG since May 2009, Chairman (CEO) from October 2016 until May 2021 and from April 2017 until October 2020 additionally Labor Director of RWE AG.
Rolf was President of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) from 2008 until 2010 and Vice President from 2010 until 2021. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of TĂśV Rheinland AG and Encavis AG.
