Rodney McMullen is chairman and CEO of The Kroger Co., having started in 1978 as a part-time stock clerk while attending UK. He held increasingly responsible positions, including financial analyst; chief financial officer; executive vice president of strategy, planning and finance; and president and COO. He is responsible for 3,700 supermarket, convenience and jewellery stores operating under two dozen names across the United States. Kroger also operates 37 U.S. food processing plants
After graduating in 1982, he worked in a Kroger retail division office in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1986, McMullen was appointed financial analyst at Kroger’s corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. He played a pivotal role in implementing Kroger’s leveraged restructuring in 1988, which kept the company public and rewarded shareholders.
McMullen was elected Kroger’s chief financial officer in 1995. His leadership expanded beyond traditional finance roles to include strategy and operations. He led the integration of Kroger’s $13 billion merger with Fred Meyer Inc. in 1999 and was subsequently elected executive vice president of strategy, planning and finance in 2000.
Three years later, McMullen was elected vice chairman of the Kroger Board of Directors in 2003 and elected president and COO in 2009. McMullen has been involved with several start-ups for Kroger, including dunnhumbyUSA and Kroger Personal Finance.
McMullen is a member of the Board of Directors of Cincinnati Financial Corp., Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation, Cincinnati Business Committee and Consumer Goods Forum. He also serves on the Xavier University Board of Trustees and on the UK Gatton College of Business & Economics Dean’s Advisory Council.
