Ms. Nonhlanhla Sylvia Mjoli-Mncube, also known as Nhlanhla, PgCert (Engineering Business Management), Fellowship in Urban Development, Masters in Regional and Urban Planning BA, MA, SPURS fellow, is the Founder of Women for Housing and the Rural Housing Loan Fund and serves as its Chairwoman. She serves as Lead Independent Director at Absa Bank Limited since February 8, 2022. She is Lead Independent Director at Absa Group Limited since February 2022 and serves as its Independent Non-Executive Director since October 15, 2020. Ms. Mjoli-Mncube serves as the Economic Adviser to the Deputy President, South Africa focusing on ASGISA. She is an acknowledged Leader in the field of housing finance, construction, development and gender rights. She started her career as Research and Development Manager at Standard Bank’s Small Business Division in 1991.
She served as an Executive Director of Bernhardt, Dunstan & Associates. She is a fellow of Aspen Global Leadership Institute, USA. She served as an Executive Director of National Urban Reconstruction and Housing Agency since 1994. She joined South African Airways (‘SAA’) in 1997 as Market Analyst and gained extensive experience in different business units of the airline. Ms. Mjoli-Mncube started her career as Town and Regional Planner and spent four years at the Social and Economic Science Research Centre at Washington State University in the United States. On her return to South Africa, she managed the creation of the first corporate village in the country comprising over 800 homes, schools, social facilities and clinics in Graceland, Germiston.
She ran her own Construction companies as well as a diversified investment company, Mjoli Development Company (Pty) Limited and Eziko Investments for three years. She served as Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Etion Limited (formerly known as Ansys Limited) since June 8, 2017 and was its Lead Independent Non-Executive Director since October 1, 2016 until May 31, 2019. She served as an Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Ansys Limited from June 05, 2013 to October 1, 2016. She serves as Chairman of Rural Housing Loan Fund, Women for Housing, and Open Society Institute in South Africa. She served as Chair of National Urban Reconstruction and Housing Agency (Nurcha). She served as a Deputy Chair of the Construction Industry Development Board and serves as President of South African Women’s Entrepreneurial Network (SAWEN). She served as a Lead independent director at Capitec Bank Holdings Ltd.
She served as Non-Executive Director of Capitec Bank Holdings Ltd. since January 26, 2004 until May 31, 2019 and served as Director of its subsidiary, Capitec Bank Limited since 2018 until May 31, 2019. Ms. Mjoli-Mncube served as a Non-Executive Director of Kalagadi Manganese (Pty) Ltd. She serves as a Director of Mjoli Development group. She was Independent Non-Executive Director of WBHO Construction (Pty) Ltd. She serves on the board of several listed companies and has held executive positions. She served as Director of Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon Ltd. since October 25, 2006 until November 16, 2016. She served as a Director of Khula Enterprise Finance Limited. She served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Cadiz Holdings Ltd. from October 2004 to November 4, 2011. She served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Tongaat Hulett Limited since 2008 until June 30, 2019. She has received awards for her achievements in the aviation industry and held board positions on organizations related to the aviation industry. She won several awards for her work to advance women in business and strengthen community development, including “SABC Business Woman of the Year“, Finance Woman of the Year (Department of Housing), “Standard Bank/Tribute Woman of Substance“, “Old Mutual/Femina Woman of the 90s“and being selected to form part of the Top 10 Black Leaders, selected by the Black Management Forum. In addition, she is a SPURS (Special Programme in Urban and Regional Studies) fellow from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) (USA) and also obtained a senior executive programme certificate from Harvard University (USA). Ms. Mjoli-Mncube obtained a BA in Economics and Statistics from the University of Fort Hare, an MSc in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Cape Town in 1985 and a post-graduate certificate in Engineering Business Management from Warwick University (UK).
