Dr. Min Kao, alongside Gary Burrell, co-founded Garmin Corporation in October 1989 with the aim of incorporating Global Positioning System (GPS) technology into navigation devices across various markets. Dr. Kao’s pivotal role in pioneering the design and engineering of GPS software technology laid the groundwork for Garmin’s original product line. As the executive chairman, Dr. Kao remains actively involved in supporting the company’s strategic planning and business development endeavors and continues to hold the position of chairman of the board of directors.

Before the establishment of Garmin, Dr. Kao contributed significantly to the field of navigation technology. At Teledyne Systems, he served as a systems analyst, specializing in inertial, radio navigation, and fire control systems. During his tenure at Magnavox Advanced Products, Dr. Kao played a crucial role in designing Kalman filter algorithms for Phase II GPS user equipment. Subsequently, he held leadership positions at King Radio Corporation and AlliedSignal, where he spearheaded the development of the first GPS navigator to receive certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
