Klaus Fröhlich was born in Soest, Germany, on June 6, 1960. From 1981 he studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University and completed his studies as a graduate engineer in 1987.

Subsequently, Klaus joined the drivetrain development of BMW AG in July 1987 as a development engineer. From 1993 until 2004 he served in different leadership roles in powertrain development; e.g. as chief engineer for Land Rover powertrains at the BMW subsidiary Rover Group in UK or as a vice president for petrol engines back in Munich again. From 2005 to 2012 he was responsible for the brand and product strategy of BMW Group, the cross brand product planning and chaired the Product Circle as senior vice president. Topics have been for example the BMW Group strategy Nr.ONE, creation of “project i” and numerous cooperation activities with other OEMs. In 2012 he headed the small and mid-sized vehicle model series (BMW 1 to 5series). From December 2014 to June 2020 he served as a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG and was responsible for Research and Development. Relevant achievements were the development and roll out of vehicle architectures with electric propulsion, growth in digital competences (e. g. the campus for autonomous driving, the I Ventures Fund and strategic partnerships with Tech companies) and a leadership role in the national platforms for e mobility and digitization of mobility for the German government. He was also member of the Supervisory Board of HERE technologies from 2015 until 2018.
