Mr John Dixon Johns, also known as Johnny, has been the Independent Director at Genuine Parts Company since November 18, 2002, and has also been its Lead Independent Director since April 26, 2017. He served as the President and Chief Operating Officer of Protective Life Insurance Company and Protective Life Corp. from August 1996 to December 2001 and from October 1993 to August 1996, served as an Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He was a Founding Partner of the law firm Maynard Cooper & Gale. Mr. Johns served as the Chairman of the Board at Protective Life Insurance Company since December 2001. He served as the Executive Chairman of Protective Life Corporation, a subsidiary of Protective Life Insurance Company since January 2003 and its Non-Independent Director since May 1997. Mr. Johns served as the Chairman of the American Council of Life Insurers. His career has been focused on active engagement in his community and philanthropy. Mr. Johns has served as the Chairman of the Business Council of Alabama and served as the Director at the Birmingham Business Alliance, the Greater Alabama Council, Boy Scouts of America and Innovation Depot. He has been a Director of John H Harland Company and Harland Clarke Corp. since 2000. He has been an Independent Director of The Southern Company since February 9, 2015. He served as an Independent Director of Protective Life Insurance Company since May 1994. An active leader in the community, he serves on a wide variety of local, statewide and national organizations and was appointed co-Chair of the Tornado Recovery Action Council of Alabama. He is a Board Member of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama and The Financial Services Roundtable and was a Board Member and Chairman of the Business Council of Alabama. He serves on the Board of Advisers for the University of Alabama’s Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility and on the Board of Trustees for the University of Alabama system. His lifetime of civic involvement and professional excellence earned his induction into the prestigious Alabama Academy of Honor in 2013. Mr. Johns holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alabama in 1974 and a Master of Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate from Harvard University in 1978.
