Dr. Hans Michel Piëch has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG since 2009. With an academic background in law from the University of Vienna. Dr. Piëch practiced as an independent attorney from 1977 to January 2021. Dr. Piëch brings specialist knowledge and experience in law, compliance, corporate strategy, international sales and marketing, management, and human resources, developed through his years of service in supervisory roles and his interactions with trade unions and the press in the automotive sector.
Dr. Piëch was born in Vienna, Austria, on 10 January 1942. He was awarded his Matura (upper secondary diploma) in 1963 and subsequently graduated from the University of Vienna with a degree in law in 1968. He obtained a doctorate in law in 1970.
He began his professional career with Gulf Oil in Pittsburgh, USA, in 1970. He became managing director of Porsche KG in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1971. From 1977 to January 2021 Dr. Piëch practiced as an independent attorney.
Dr. Piëch has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Porsche Holding GmbH in Salzburg, Austria, since 1975 and a member of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, Stuttgart, Germany, since 1989. He has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Porsche Automobil Holding SE since 2007, and since 2009, he is a member of the Supervisory Board of AUDI AG, part of the Executive Committee of Audi AG since 2016 and part of the Executive Committee of Volkswagen AG since June 2020.
Dr. Piëch has specialist knowledge and experience of the automotive industry thanks to his years of work for the respective supervisory bodies, at Porsche Holding in Salzburg and Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG in Stuttgart since the beginning of the 90s. Furthermore, he has extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of law/compliance including capital markets, management/supervision, corporate strategy and international sales and marketing as well as human resources. In addition, he is particularly experienced in interacting and working with trade unions and the press.
